# 4 continents, 7 countries, 14 cities

   ## The tuqtuli project started in 2024. Since then it has been at festivals, conferences, events and universities in fourteen cities in seven countries on four continents. And that’s just the start. It’s in tuqtuli’s nature to travel the world. To you, too! Just send a [mail](mailto:mail@tuqtuli.com).

## Austria

## Belgium

- Brussels ……… 2 days tuqtuli [workshop](https://tuqtuli.com/workshops) at the [New European Bauhaus Festival](https://new-european-bauhaus.europa.eu/events/calendar-neb-events/festival-new-european-bauhaus-2024-04-09_en) at the [Musée Art et Histoire](https://www.artandhistory.museum) together with 12 team members. 9 of them were Juli’s students from the [ecosign Akademie](https://www.ecosign.de/?crmid=aCbGbJcKaAaAaAaA&accountId=1666271431&campaignId=280668562&adgroupId=20499736882&creativeId=423605229481&keywordId=kwd-99854947282&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=280668562&gbraid=0AAAAAC9vZhdJoQ2r12Hb2ztplk35nNwU_&gclid=Cj0KCQjwrc7GBhCfARIsAHGcW5X1re6hhY8gHJUofQ7MV8zKGaDqDrB2YNKr_9R_cZjg3EZSSMF2h74aAv-5EALw_wcB), Cologne, Germany. Additional team members were the designer and design researcher [Dr. Karel van der Waarde](https://graphicdesign-research.com/about.html) from Brussels, Belgium, teaching in Luzern, Switzerland, [Juli](https://tuqtuli.com/who-initiated-tuqtuli) and her husband [Jörg Gudehus](https://joerggudehus.de/), a computer scientist. The participants were aged between 4 and 72. They spoke 27 different languages including Catalan, Albanian, Montenegrin, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Suomi, Japanese, Dutch, Esperanto, and Greek. They had very different professional backgrounds like therapist, journalist, patent attorney, physicist, social media manager, urban planner, acoustic engineer.

## Côte d’Ivoire

- Bondoukou ……… [the ibuproject](https://tuqtuli.com/the-ibuproject) member [Adam Yeo](https://www.adamyeo.com), assistant professor of graphic design, and lecturer-researcher at the University of Bondoukou, had his students translate the medical instructions for ibuprofen into tuqtuli

## France

- Clermont-Ferrand ……… tuquli talk at the [Pendant l’apéro design](https://www.instagram.com/p/DPjgmfIjPrB/?img_index=8) event at the co-working space [Le Portemine](https://www.leportemine.fr/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAadd0c5vOkQaZgq-V2mEYAYmCsmsjBOWJ4rW3Vb4mt9SGKlEafur8X-NveDYCQ_aem_cv3l70R6nL-jLODiniRL0Q) and 3 hours curated tuquli workshop the other day. Afterwards, [Juli](https://tuqtuli.com/who-initiated-tuqtuli) traveled with her host [Loïc Marleix](https://design-brouhaha.com/) to Paris, where they met up with [Olivier Morin](https://sites.google.com/site/sitedoliviermorin/), [Edgar Walthert](https://ewalthert.com) and several other people who, like them, are working on and researching pictographic languages.
- Lyon ……… [Loïc Marleix](https://design-brouhaha.com/) had his students at [Strate](https://www.strate.design/en) École de Design and [ESD](https://ecole-du-digital.com/) École Supérieure du Digital translate the medical instructions for ibuprofen into tuqtuli

## Germany

- Berlin ……… 2 days open workshop in cooperation with Luisella Ströbele and her former fashion label icke, Berlin (now [luis ella](https://luis-ella.com/)) as part of the [48 h Neukölln Festival](https://48-stunden-neukoelln.de/de/festival). A distinctly international audience was invited to transfer their individual pictographic messages onto T‑shirts, have their photo taken wearing them and take them home with them.
- Berlin ……… 8 days curated tuqtuli workshop at the [Media University of Applied Sciences](https://www.media-university.de/en/) with 17 students from the field of visual communication and game design aged between 20 and 23. They came from 9 countries and spoke 12 different languages – Bulgarian, Catalan, English, Farsi, German, Hindi, Norwegian, Spanish, Swahili, Thai, and Vietnamese.
- Berlin ……… 3 hours curated tuqtuli workshop at the [Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin](https://blog.sbb.berlin/termin/tuqtuli-16-10-25/) (Berlin State Library). This renowned research institution usually offers fascinating insights into the past through its collections and programme. This time, it opened its doors to an excursion into the fusence of communication based on sequences of signs.

- Frankfurt am Main ……… As part of its being [World Design Capital 2026](https://wdc2026.org/en), WDC, [Juli](https://tuqtuli.com/who-initiated-tuqtuli) was invited to host a [dialogue workshop](https://wdc2026.org/en/events/tuqtuli-oder-dialogwerkstatt) at the [Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts)](https://www.museumangewandtekunst.de/) and to set up a WDC campus project in the run-up to this event. In a first full-day workshop, students from the Hochschule für öffentliches Management und Sicherheit (HöMS) (Hessian University of Applied Sciences for Public Management and Security), studying police and administration, learned to communicate using the tuqtuli principle. Building on the idea of the later workshop on the »[Frankfurt Jacket](https://wdc2026.org/de/events/die-demokratische-frankfurter-jacke-oder-dialogwerkstatt)«, the second full-day »[Frankfurt Message](https://www.juligudehus.net/img/entries/tuqtuli/TUQTULI-Workshop-Frankfurter-Botschaft-WDC-Campus-MAK.mov)« workshop focussed on a message in tuqtuli, later to be incorporated into the political garment. On the evening, Juli gave a talk on the tuqtuli project, followed by a panel discussion about its potential and future prospects. Guests included Dr Eliane Ettmüller / Frankfurt / scholar of Islamic and political studies, active in the field of educational work; Dr Tobias Gantner / Cologne / doctor, now a consultant in health literacy; and Andreas Knauf / Darmstadt / lawyer specialising in copyright and trademark law.
- Frankfurt am Main ……… exhibition of [the milulayu project](https://tuqtuli.com/the-milulayu-project) as part of the WDC campus exhibition »dreams, ideas & prototypes« at the [Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts)](https://www.museumangewandtekunst.de/) and a second, three-hour workshop entitled »[Frankfurt Message](https://www.juligudehus.net/img/entries/tuqtuli/TUQTULI-Workshop-Frankfurter-Botschaft-WDC-Campus-MAK.mov)« on the opening day
- Krumbach ……… 3 hours curated tuqtuli workshop at the TypoSalon of the [Forum Typografie](https://forum-typografie.de) with 16 participants, one of them from Ukraine, all of them from the field of visual communication
- Oberau ……… talk plus 2 hours open tuqtuli workshop at the »[Interdisziplinäre Pfingsttagung](https://www.juligudehus.net/en/interdisziplinare-pfingsttagung)« (Interdisciplinary Whitsun Conference) 22 participants from very different professional backgrounds like journalist, architect, IT specialist, personnel manager, tailor, illustrator, educator, art historian. The participants spoke 8 different languages including German, Russian, Spanish, English, Italian, French, Polish, and Dutch.
- Schwäbisch Gmünd ……… 4 days curated workshop and exhibition of the workshop results at the [Hochschule für Gestaltung](https://www.hfg-gmuend.de/en/) (University of Design)
- Schwäbisch Gmünd ……… seminar on the topic of​‘visual thinking’ in the master’s programme strategic design at the [Hochschule für Gestaltung (University of Design) in Schwäbisch Gmünd](https://signup.hfg-gmuend.de/laborwoche-25/workshops/tuqtuli), Germany. The subject of this seminar was pictographic communication. Specifically, translating instructions for various medicines into tuqtuli. To this end, the students could draw on the expertise of [the ibuproject](https://tuqtuli.com/the-ibuproject) member and pharmacologist [Muna Khalil](https://www.linkedin.com/in/munakhalil/) and engage in discussions with students of linguistics professor [Bettina Bock](https://idsl2.phil-fak.uni-koeln.de/institut/personen/lehrendenseiten/prof-dr-bettina-m-bock) at the University of Cologne. The resulting works will be exhibited in various locations as part of [the milulayu project](https://tuqtuli.com/the-milulayu-project). At the same time, this seminar forms part of the contribution to Frankfurt’s programme as World Design Capital. Later, the students’ tuqtuli translations will be featured in the WDC Campus exhibition at the [Museum Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts)](https://www.museumangewandtekunst.de/).

- Kyoto ……… talk and 1 hour open tuqtuli workshop at the »[from now on](https://www.instagram.com/_fromnowon2024/)« conference together with 6 of Juli’s students from the 4 days workshop at the Doshisha joshi daigaku as team members next to a presentation of the results of the previous student workshop

## USA

- Palo Alto ……… 3 hours curated tuqtuli workshop at the [Henry M. Gunn High School](https://gunn.pausd.org) with 12 students speaking 7 different languages aged between 15 and 17 together with Claudia Schröppel, their teacher, as a team member
- San Francisco ……… 1 day open tuqtuli workshop together with the Goethe Institute at the first [EU festival in the Golden Gate Park](https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/worldwide/north-america/events/europe-park-2025). An additional team member was Juli’s husband Jörg. The participants spoke 13 different languages including Croatian, Farsi, French, Hindi, Malagasy, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Tagalog. They had professional backgrounds like baker, chemist, consultant, designer, florist, geologist, physicist, teacher, trainer, translator
